California Storms

Storm-Clouds

While we have our electricity back, I’d thought I’d squeeze in a post. Last night’s storm was tremendous and today’s is supposed to be a lot worse with very high wind gusts and a big swell. What’s so interesting about these storms is that we’re getting thunder and some lightening and that is a very [...]

Capitola-Early-Morning

We like it best in winter when things quiet down a bit. This is the Venetian Hotel in morning fog, a far cry from it’s sister hotel in Las Vegas. The lagoon in front of the hotel is a seasonal thing. When the rains begin and Soquel Creek starts to run fast  out of the [...]

The Roadhouse – Gone Forever

Roadhouse-Sculpture

I loved this place from the first time I saw it on the cliff at Pleasure Point. The Road House was built in 1902 with a saloon on the first floor and on the second floor were beds for “extracurricular activities” as well as a massage parlor. Bootleggers buried their contraband liquor in the sand [...]

Glass Mulch for Your Garden

Glass Mulch

There’s a garden shop in Half Moon bay that sells tumbled glass mulch. Glass mulch for your garden. I don’t know. I’d like to see it in a glass jar or a shallow bowl, but a whole path …it seemed a bit mulch to me. (Click to Zoom is still working though).

Planet of the Jellies

Jellyfish in Blue

I brought  a tripod to the Monterey Bay Aquarium one day and learned a valuable lesson. The crowd standing in front of the exhibits parted like biblical waters when they saw the tripod.  I could probably have mounted a cupcake on the tripod and still had the exhibits to myself. (Click to Zoom still works.)

Santa Cruz Wildfire

Smoky Sunset

The smoke from the Lockheed fire has been terrible. We’ve had to close up the house during the day while there’s wind and wait for the fog to come in to open up again.  Sometimes, the fog comes in on top of the smoke and pushes it down, which is what happened last night in [...]

100 Degrees Farenheit Today

a-day-for-the-beach

It’s so hot I can’t even think, much less write. Yesterday it was 96 degrees. I heard from Wales that they had three frosty mornings and it sounded pretty good to me. If the fog comes in tonight we’ll get a reprieve from the heat. Hope springs eternal.

“It’s Terrorism,” the Crowd Mumbled..

fear-and-dark-matter

It’s terrorism the crowd  mumbled to one another as they huddled in a group in front of the bank. The doors were locked and a bank employee was allowing only a few people in at a time. I had already encountered a problem at the hospital where I had gone for a routine lab test.  [...]

Itsy Bitsy Earthquake

san-andreas-fault-in-california

It sounded like cats running across the roof. Jim was in the middle of a conference call here at home with his co-workers on the other side of the mountain in Silicon Valley when the cats skittered across the roof. The conference call was canceled. The earthquake probably felt worse to people in the valley, [...]
