Santa Cruz is beautiful and horrible at the same time. Just like me. Jim and I  love living here even though it’s losing it’s small town feel and commute traffic is wretched. We have dramatic winter storms, horrible wild fires, and earthquakes, floods and droughts. The big uglies.

But the beauties compensate for all of that. It’s a college town with great bookstores and three indie film houses. We’re minutes away from the farms that provide us with fresh produce. There are many years when we get luscious strawberries all the way through October. I now think think of bananas as winter food and I wont eat them until the strawberries are finished.

The thing we like best of all is the fog. We had no idea when we moved here how much we would like the fog. I’m supposed to call it “a marine layer” but it’s fog nonetheless. Most days it sits out in the bay, a thin strip of white gauze. It builds in height and rolls into land sometimes on a very stiff breeze. I’ve seen it blow the beaches clean of tourists in twenty minutes. Santa Cruz is beautiful and horrible at the same time. Just like me.

Meet Some of the Cast of Footnotes. When I changed from a handwritten journal to a blog, I still wanted to illustrate my posts.

I shamelessly begged friends and complete strangers to participate in my projects. Here are some of them.

    Hi Susan,
I’m currently taking a class with Michael, another student you met who worked at Jamba Juice (he is also affiliated with Moxy). Anyway, I was expressing in class that I was looking for an older actress/ stand-in for my short film and he mentioned your name saying that you had offered to help. I apologize for contacting you this way. He gave me an email which did not work.

Does this sound like something of interest to you or anyone you know? I have posted to craigslist and a couple other casting websites, but haven’t gotten any bites. If it doesn’t work out I will just have to be more creative :) . Such is film!

    Here is the synopsis:

Synopsis: Astrid is a young, thin 20 yr. old college student, but anything but vibrant. She has developed an unhealthy fear of food, sparked by her grandmother’s diabetes (and possible death), and is consumed by news in the media concerning agribusiness, GMO, obesity, food-related illness and the eating habits of people she knows or sees in her daily life.

You can contact me via email.
    Sincerely,
    Ashley

P.S. I read some of your blogs. Very enjoyable! I like your writing.
